Firstly the Government institute which held the responsibility of the Sri Lankan gem and jewellery industry was titled as State Gem Corporation. The institute was established under the founder chairmanship of late Mr T.G.Punchiappuhamy on 1st November 1971 via Parliamentary Act No. 13 of 9th March of the aforementioned year. The State Government Corporation was subsequently retitled as the National Gem and Jewellery Authority in the year 1993 via Parliamentary Act No. 50.

The new Mandate & Commission of the authority is the Directive to Develop, Regulate and Promote the Gemstone & Jewellery Industry in Sri Lanka.

 Sri Lankan Gem & Jewellery Industry has today strived to accomplish the commitment conferred in its charter as a premier national institution having recorded the 3rd position in the gross National Export.

The activities initiated by the NGJA has positively contributed towered the gemstone trading to many countries such as the USA, Thailand, Hong Kong, China Britain European Union, Singapore, Switzerland. worldwide participation at all trade Fairs & Exhibitions pursuing the perceptibility of Sri Lankan Gem & Jewellery industry under “Sri Lanka – The Sapphire Capital” branding strategy whilst extracting the promotional impact of the ever so popular “Sri Lanka Pavilions” has indeed been the additional support measure facilitated by the NGJA.

Also, the high tech Gemmological laboratory by NGJA has globally Accredited and Recognized Laboratory constituent of internationally renowned Expatriate Gemologists, Explicitly trained staff inclusive of the ultramodern types of equipment. This upgraded high tech laboratory generates invaluable buyer confidence whilst providing a service of immense convenience to all investors involved in the industry. About 60% of the jewellery workshops and craftsmen are located mainly in the rural areas of Southern and Central provinces and in pockets in the North Western, Eastern and Northern provinces. 30% and 10% of the jewellery workshop are located in suburban and urban areas respectively.

Responsibilities and Activities of NGJA

  • Development, Regulation & Promotion of the Sri Lanka Gemstone & Jewellery industry
  • Initiation, Facilitation & Engagement of Procedures and Techniques to underpin the deemed progressive direction of the aforementioned industry benevolent mandate. For the promotion and development of the gem industry.
  • Exploration, Pursuance, Negotiation, Exploitation & Furtherance of Marketing Opportunities and Business to Business (B2B) Networking Platforms prevalent in the Domestic as well as in International Markets with the view to consolidate and reinforce the ever increasing demand for the product output of the Sri Lankan Gemstone & Jewellery Industry.
  • Facilitation and Engagement of both Local and Internationally reputed professional resource persons to conduct and update the Technical, Marketing, Social Responsibility & Business Administrative knowledge & Aptitude via Nationwide programs for the benevolence of all stakeholders involved in the Sri Lankan Gem & Jewellery Industry.
  • Implementation of well-strategized activations designed to underpin the accomplishment of an untarnished level of supreme buyer confidence within the Buyer and Trader communities of Sri Lankan Gemstones & Jewellery Industry.
  • Prescription and Abolishment of Illegitimate Industrial Activity inclusive of Irresponsible and Environmentally Damaging Gemstone mining and Illegal trafficking.
  • Establishment of fully equipped and dynamic Laboratory Units at strategic locations to facilitate services such as Gemstone Certification & Precious Metal Assays.
  • Upgrading of Regulatory Industry norms and Standards to be abreast with the international benchmarks as well as to throughput the social accountability of staff members and the attractiveness of alluring new enrollments critically needed for the continuance of the industry.
